My boyfriend and I have been on the lookout for good sandwiches lately. Singapore has plenty of cafés serving great sandwiches—such as the cold Burrata Deli Sarnie at Offsite and the warm Cheeky Fella Sandwich at Breakfast Grill, to name a few.

This time, my boyfriend suggested to visit Wheathead, a tiny bakery tucked away in One-North.

By the time we arrived around 11am on a weekend morning, the place was already bustling.

One thing immediately stood out to us: there were no seats.

The entire concept revolves around a small open kitchen with customers standing around the counter eating. Personally, I'm not the biggest fan of this setup since I prefer sitting down and taking my time with brunch. Still, people kept streaming in throughout our visit, and based on the conversations I overheard, they seemed to be regulars—which suggested that people kept coming back for more.

Wheathead specialises in artisanal bread, hearty sandwiches, rich pies and pastries. Their menu rotates regularly too. During our visit, the seasonal specials included Peach Shortcake (SGD15) and Guinness Beef Brisket Pot Pie (SGD22) (look out for the menu below!).

Tempting as they sounded, we decided to stick with two of their crowd favourites instead: the Baker's Choice Sandwich and Banana Cream Pie. You can see the full menu at the bottom of this post.

Baker's Choice Sandwich

Baker's Choice Sandwich

Shaved Ham, Cheese, Isigny Ste Mère Salted Butter, Mustard

💸 SGD19.00
⭐⭐⭐ 3.5/5

Firstly, the ingredients in this sandwich definitely tasted premium. The butter was rich without being jelak, while the mustard added a refreshing tanginess that balanced the savoury ham very nicely.

That said, I personally found the sandwich just a little dry. I kept wishing there was another layer of jam, cheese or something slightly more moist to tie everything together. But this probably comes down to personal preference - I've realised that I gravitate towards warm sandwiches with melted cheese, caramelised onions or juicy fillings, so cold deli-style sandwiches are rarely my favourites.

Still, the quality of the ingredients was undeniable.

Banana Cream Pie

💸 SGD14.50
⭐⭐⭐⭐ 4.5/5

Besides the sandwich, we were also craving something sweet, so we ordered the Banana Cream Pie. This reminded me of the Banoffee Pie from Offsite since the two desserts are quite similar. That Banoffee Pie from Offsite was my very first introduction to this banana-filled dessert as well.

If I really must compare the two, though, I think I preferred Wheathead's version.

Creamy, refreshing and wonderfully flaky

The banana slices felt much more integrated into the dessert as an inner layer, while the chilled banana cream filling was smooth, refreshing and pleasantly light.

My favourite part, however, has to be the tart-like pastry shell. It was flaky and buttery, giving every bite an extra layer of texture that I really enjoyed.

It's certainly not cheap—especially compared to Offsite's SGD8.00 Banoffee Pie—but I do think the larger portion and taste justify trying it at least once.

Other pastries at Wheathead

Overall, while the baked goods at Wheathead tasted premium, everything on the menu are on the pricier side, so I probably wouldn't visit very frequently. I also wish they offered milk-based coffee options, as they currently only serve batch brew coffee. I also would've loved somewhere to sit while enjoying the meal.

But if you're looking for artisanal sandwiches and pastries, Wheathead is worth checking out. I'm already curious about their other sandwiches and seasonal specials, so I can see myself returning for another visit.
