I love Korean food! I was binge-watching this Korean drama called "Bon Appétit, Your Majesty" recently, and the visuals of the delicious meals got me craving Korean food.

Woo-Dae Galbi (SODENG)
Dweji Gomtang (Onggii)
Jjajangmyeon (Jeong's Jjajang)

I have shared some of my favourite Korean eateries in Singapore before, such as SODENG (Woo-Dae Galbi / Korean Grilled Beef Short Ribs), onggii (Dweji Gomtang / Pork Bone Soup), and Jeong's Jjajang (Jjajangmyeon / Black Bean Noodles).

So, when I was invited to visit Kong Madam, a Korean restaurant located in Guoco Midtown II, Bugis, Singapore, of course I couldn't resist!

Kong Madam specialises in handmade tofu that is made fresh every morning. Tofu is so versatile; they offer a wide range of tofu dishes including 12 different Soontofu (tofu soup), Spicy Pork and Tofu Kimchi, and Tofu and Vegetable Bibimbap.

We got ourselves two Combo Meals and two additional main dishes to share. The Combo Meals were great value, as each set comes with soontofu, hot stone rice, and Korean banchan (side dishes), with prices ranging from SGD28.90 to SGD45.90. See the menu at the end of this post!

Beef Soontofu (slightly spicy)

💸SGD23.90 for Soontofu Set (Beef Soontofu + Hot Stone Rice + Side Dishes)
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️🌟 5/5

Here is the review of the first dish: Beef Soontofu. It came bubbling hot in a stone bowl with a fiery shade of red that probably would've made you suspected that it is going to be hot and spicy.

Thankfully, it wasn't that spicy, I can vouch for that as my spice tolerance is low. The soontofu also comes with a large egg. This was super appetising, and we're just getting started!

Seaweed Soontofu (non-spicy)
Generous portion of seaweed and tofu

💸SGD22.90 for Soontofu Set (Seaweed Soontofu + Hot Stone Rice + Side Dishes)
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️️ 4/5

I ordered the Seaweed Soontofu as I was worried the Beef Soontofu would be too spicy for me. Naturally, this took the flavour down a notch, allowing the natural savouriness of the seaweed and tofu to shine through. It tastes comforting and nostalgic, similar to a soup lovingly cooked at home.

This is a great choice especially if you're ordering the Combo Meal with charcoal grilled meat, as it is like a palate cleanser that complements heavier foods.

💸SGD39.90 for ala carte, SGD45.90 for Combo Meal (Soontofu + Charcoal Grilled Beef Short Ribs + Hot Stone Rice + Side Dishes)
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️🌟 5/5

This was easily my favourite dish from the moment it arrived at our table. The smoke evaporating from the meat with charcoal-burnt ends, the sizzling sounds and fragrant smokiness were a treat for our eyes, ears, and nose. One bite of these grilled beef short ribs seals the deal - they have been beautifully caramelised and perfectly seasoned. This is a must-try if you're visiting Kong Madam!

Charcoal Grilled Eel

💸SGD39.90 for ala carte, SGD45.90 for Combo Meal (Soontofu + Charcoal Grilled Eel + Hot Stone Rice + Side Dishes)
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️🌟 5/5

I've never raved about eel much, but one bite of this got me wondering, why not? There is no unpleasant fishy taste at all - the meat itself was very nice. This has a similar flavour profile to the Charcoal Grilled Beef as it is caramelized with onions and glazed with a sweet sauce too, but the texture is much softer and the eel breaks apart easily.

Fried Handmade Dumpling

💸SGD14.90 (6 pieces)
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️🌟 5/5

We were on the fence about ordering the steamed or fried handmade dumplings. We finally decided on the fried version, and we have no regrets! It was crispy on the outside, while still retaining the juiciness on the inside. Dipping them into the accompanying sweet vinegar sauce made them even better - a perfect harmony of tanginess, sweetness and savouriness. Great choice for a side dish.

Spicy Pork and Tofu Kimchi

💸SG38.00
⭐️⭐️ 2.5/5

Unfortunately, this fell short of our expectations compared to the other dishes, which were all above average. The tofu was firm and fresh, and the spicy pork and kimchi were decent, but the components didn't come together particularly well as a single dish. Also, at this price point, I think I'd much prefer tofu in soontofu, which was also much tastier.

Hot Stone Rice (covered)

💸 Comes free as part of Combo Meal or Soontofu Set, $4.00 to add-on

I wanted to give a special mention to the Hot Stone Rice. It was served in a traditional Korean hot stone bowl, and beneath the lid was fluffy, glistening white rice. It was the best choice of carbs to go with the rest of the meal.

Interior of Kong Madam

There is a decent number of seats at Kong Madam, making it a comfortable spot for group lunches and dinners. However, do note that the restaurant closes early if it sells out of its daily handmade tofu, and it accepts walk-ins only. So please visit early!

Overall, we enjoyed our meal and experience at Kong Madam. The handmade soontofu was comforting and tasty, while the charcoal grilled beef short ribs and eel were definitely highlights. If you're looking for a hearty Korean meal in Singapore, this is a spot worth checking out.
