Merci Marcel (Club Street)
Been wanting to go to Merci Marcel for a while, and finally visited on Christmas Eve. Surprisingly, it wasn’t crowded at all despite it being the eve of a public holiday.
We ordered a starter and dessert from their seasonal festive menu, and a main from the regular dinner menu.
🍆 Eggplant Caviar (Festive Menu)
Avocado, mint & lovage sauce
⭐⭐⭐ 3/5
I was a little skeptical about this dish as it felt quite adventurous for me. The texture was similar to mashed potatoes, creamy and savoury, and we thought it would make a great dip. However, it only came with baguettes as croutons. The flavour reminded me of celery (which I later googled: lovage is a herb that tastes like celery), and I’m not a fan of celery. I didn’t really enjoy this starter, but my friend liked it!
🦆 Duck Parmentier (Dinner Menu)
Duck confit, shredded Darphin potatoes, duck jus
⭐⭐⭐⭐🌟 5/5
This main dish saved the dining experience. The duck was nicely seared on the outside, giving it a slight crunch, while the inside was juicy and tender, easily breaking apart. It sat on top of a shredded potato pancake and was rich in flavour. The vegetables helped cut through the richness, and overall it was delicious. Definitely recommended.
☕ Iced Tiramisu (Festive Menu)
Chestnut & chocolate
⭐⭐ 2/5
This was a bit of a letdown, as it wasn’t quite the classic, indulgent tiramisu I was expecting. The mascarpone tasted slightly watered down and foamy, the chocolate layer was nice but a little too sweet, and there were very few ladyfingers, not enough to balance the cream. I think I’d still prefer a more traditional tiramisu.
I think this place had been on my to-go list for so long that my expectations were quite high, so I ended up feeling a little disappointed. (We were also bummed they didn’t play Christmas songs on Christmas Eve, but that’s a small thing 😂)
Nevertheless, I’d still return to try other dishes, and to visit their sister outlet, The French Fold, for crepes one day!
