We visited this restaurant as a family for a Peranakan-style dinner. I usually have a soft spot for Nyonya dishes - rich, aromatic, and comforting - so expectations were fairly high.
Here are the dishes we ordered:
🦐 Baba’s Udang Lemak Prawns (Small)
Nyonya pineapple prawn curry in coconut milk
💸 MYR 55.00
⭐⭐⭐⭐🌟 5/5
This was easily the highlight of the meal.
The curry was incredibly flavourful and creamy with a hint of coconut. There are two variations (fish or prawns), and we opted for prawns, which turned out fresh, meaty, and satisfying.
The diced pineapple added a nice sweetness and slight acidity that cut through the richness of the gravy. Even though it's a little spicy (I can't handle much spice), I still find it super delicious and would order again.
🦆 Itik Tim
Traditional Nyonya duck soup with salted vegetables, tomatoes & salted plums
💸 MYR 30.00
⭐⭐
We ordered this thinking it would be a lighter, soup-based dish to complement the other richer dishes.
While the flavours of the soup were expected - savoury and slightly tangy - the soup was a little too salty for my liking.
Since the overall meal already had a few salty dishes, this ended up increasing the saltiness even more, rather than refreshing our palates. Unfortunately, this left a bad impression and I had to give it a lower rating.
🐔 Pong Teh Chicken (Small)
Peranakan chicken stew with potatoes
💸 MYR 28.00
⭐⭐⭐
The pong teh chicken was juicy and the gravy was flavourful. However, similar to the Itik Tim, I found it a little bit too salty as well.
Since we ordered two dishes that leaned toward the salty side, it unfortunately affected my impression of this dish.
🥬 Kangkung Belacan (Small)
💸 MYR 20.00
⭐⭐⭐
This was a fairly standard plate of kangkung belacan. Nothing particularly memorable here, but nothing to criticise about as well. It served its role as a vegetable dish to balance out the meal.
🍚 Rice
- Large - MYR 3.00
- Small - MYR 2.50
Skipping the rating here as they're just rice. I just wanted to share that there are different portions available.
I usually rave about Nyonya meals, but sadly this visit leaned saltier than expected. In hindsight, I would skip the Itik Tim and try other dishes instead.
That said, the pineapple prawn curry was genuinely tasty and recommended.
