Make Specialty Coffee at Home Without Breaking the Bank
I love coffee, and I recently got to try these coffee capsules from TAG Espresso (a Singapore homegrown brand) and I have to say, I’m impressed. If you’re someone who enjoys Arabica coffee but also wants to save money, this might be something worth checking out.
What makes TAG Espresso interesting is that it’s not your usual coffee pod. It’s a mini capsule of freeze-dried, crystallised 100% Arabica coffee powder. All you need to do is "peel and pour", just as what their tagline says. No fancy coffee equipment needed.
But honestly, how convenient and how much cheaper is it really to make coffee with TAG Espresso?
I put it to the test by bringing my word search book, an empty bottle, and a TAG Espresso capsule out to a park. I bought a 200ML bottle of cold Meiji Fresh Milk from FairPrice (a convenience store), poured the milk and coffee powder into the bottle, gave it a good shake... and just like that, I made myself a cafe latte.
The Meiji Fresh Milk was SGD 1.28, and if you had purchased the 30-capsule box, it only costs SGD2.12 per capsule, bringing the total to SGD3.40 for a tasty latte. In this economy, that’s honestly quite a steal considering most café lattes are around $6 or more.
Plus, if you use my promo code "HEYITSREGINI", you get a 10% discount, bringing your cost of homemade latte even lower at SGD3.19. I don't earn any commission from this promo code, so I'm really sharing because I like the product. Do note that the promo code is for a limited time only.
The freeze-dried crystallised ground coffee makes it easy to dissolve in hot or cold liquid.
Also, another thing I really liked about the design is that the capsules are tightly sealed — so tightly sealed that it might be a bit difficult to peel open, but that gives me the reassurance that no pests would discover the coffee powder in it. That brings great comfort to me.
The bundle set I tried comes with 5 different flavours, with 2 capsules each, which makes it a great way to explore different profiles without committing to a full box. Here are all the 5 flavours:
| # | Coffee | Roast | Intensity | Aroma | Origin | Description |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Midnight Blue | Dark | 4/5 | Chocolate, Nutty, Bold | Guatemala, Sumatra, Colombia | Midnight Blue coffee uses Arabica beans from Colombia, Guatemala and Sumatra. This dark roast is bold, with the flavour of roasted nuts and chocolatey fragrance, smooth with long lasting aftertaste. |
| 2 | TAG Blue | Medium-Dark | 3/5 | Cocoa Butter, Rich Flavour, Sweet Acidity | Colombia, Sumatra, Ethiopia | Cocoa Butter is a medium dark roast of Arabica beans sourced from Colombia, Sumatra, and Ethiopia. It presents a taste of Cocoa Butter with sweet acidity, rich yet no bitterness. |
| 3 | Capri Blue | Medium | 2.5/5 | Apricot Chestnut, Roasted Chestnut, Maple Syrup | Guatemala, Sumatra, Colombia | Apricot Chestnut uses Arabica beans sourced from Guatemala, Sumatra, and Colombia. This medium roast coffee carries distinct taste of fruity sweetness and aroma of roasted chestnuts, smooth with aftertaste of maple syrup. |
| 4 | Fantasy Coconut | Medium-Dark | 3/5 | Coconut, Nutty, Caramel | Guatemala, Sumatra, Brazil | Using Arabica beans from Brazil, Guatemala and Sumatra, the medium-dark roasted beans were finely grinded and blended, with added coconut flavour. |
| 5 | Fantasy Grapefruit | Medium-Dark | 3/5 | Grapefruit, Fruity, Lively Acidity | Guatemala, Sumatra, Brazil | Balanced, fruity and with a note of lively acidity, the medium-dark roasted blend uses 100% Arabica beans sourced internationally, blended together to create a premium brew, enhanced with grapefruit flavour. |
My personal favourite was TAG Blue, probably because I usually gravitate towards medium-dark roasts. It strikes a really nice balance between richness and smoothness without being too overpowering. I preferred making it with hot milk, resulting in a creamy and smooth latte.
"Fantasy Grapefruit" flavour even inspired me to be experimental and make an Iced Orange Americano:
I'll be honest, this drink is a bit too adventurous for my liking, I still prefer my coffee with milk only. It tastes refreshing and fruity, though, and the unconventional taste grew on me as I took my third and fourth sips.
Overall, I think TAG Espresso is something worth checking out. It is a really convenient and affordable way to enjoy specialty coffee, especially if you're always on the go, don't have a coffee machine at home, and/or you want a quick caffeine fix without spending too much.
Once again, don't miss out on my promo code - HEYITSREGINI - for 10% off on the TAG espresso website for a limited time only.
